BaZi (八字, pronounced "bah-dzuh", literally "Eight Characters") is a Chinese astrology system more than 4,000 years old. It maps your birth year, month, day and hour onto the Chinese calendar to produce four pairs of characters — one pair per pillar — which together describe your natural strengths, blind spots and the rhythm of your life. Unlike Western sun-sign astrology, which only uses your birth month, BaZi works from a precise birth time and is often compared to a "genetic blueprint" for your character and fortune.
The term 八字 translates directly as "eight characters". Your chart is built from four pillars — year, month, day, hour — and each pillar carries two Chinese characters: one Heavenly Stem (天干) and one Earthly Branch (地支). Four pillars × two characters = eight characters. That is the name, and that is the whole system in one sentence.
The four pillars record four moments of your birth, each one drawn from the Chinese lunisolar calendar:

There are 10 Heavenly Stems (甲 Jia, 乙 Yi, 丙 Bing, 丁 Ding, 戊 Wu, 己 Ji, 庚 Geng, 辛 Xin, 壬 Ren, 癸 Gui) and 12 Earthly Branches (子 Zi, 丑 Chou, 寅 Yin, 卯 Mao, 辰 Chen, 巳 Si, 午 Wu, 未 Wei, 申 Shen, 酉 You, 戌 Xu, 亥 Hai). Stems and branches each carry one of the Five Elements — Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, Water — plus Yin or Yang energy. Your eight characters show which elements are strong, which are weak, and how they interact. That balance is the heart of a BaZi reading.
BaZi grew out of the same classical tradition as the I Ching (《易经》). Its framework was formalized more than a thousand years ago and was refined for centuries by court astrologers. Practitioners also draw on traditional Chinese medicine's Five Element theory — the same Wood/Fire/Earth/Metal/Water model used in acupuncture — which is why a BaZi reading often sounds like a health check for your life, not just a fortune-telling session.

Partly, but only in the same sense that a weather forecast is "telling the future". BaZi describes tendencies and timing — it does not say one fixed event will happen. Practitioners read it as guidance: work with your strengths, prepare for the harder cycles, and time big decisions when your chart is supportive. That is why so many people use it during career changes, before marriage, or when they feel stuck and want a clearer sense of direction.
