The Five Elements (五行, Wu Xing) — Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal and Water — are the backbone of BaZi. Every Heavenly Stem and Earthly Branch carries one element, so your eight characters are really a five-element balance sheet. The elements do not just sit there: they generate and control each other in two fixed cycles, which is how a BaZi reading decides what is strong, what is weak, and what to do about it.
| Element | Chinese | Season | Color | Nature | Organs |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Wood | 木 | Spring | Green | Growth, planning, ideals | Liver, eyes |
| Fire | 火 | Summer | Red | Warmth, visibility, passion | Heart, circulation |
| Earth | 土 | Late summer | Yellow | Stability, nourishment, trust | Stomach, digestion |
| Metal | 金 | Autumn | White | Precision, discipline, cutting through | Lungs, skin |
| Water | 水 | Winter | Black/Blue | Flow, wisdom, adaptability | Kidneys, bones |
Each element feeds the next: Wood feeds Fire, Fire creates Earth (ash), Earth bears Metal (ore), Metal produces Water (condensation), Water nourishes Wood. In a chart, this cycle is support: the element before yours is your "mother" that strengthens you, and the element after yours is what you produce.
木 Wood → 火 Fire → 土 Earth → 金 Metal → 水 Water → 木 Wood
Each element also disciplines another: Wood parts Earth (roots), Earth dams Water, Water extinguishes Fire, Fire melts Metal, Metal cuts Wood. This cycle is the friction of the system — it is what keeps balance from collapsing into excess. A chart with too much of one element is corrected by the element that controls it, which is why readings suggest environments, colors and habits that supply the missing "controller".
木 Wood → 土 Earth → 水 Water → 火 Fire → 金 Metal → 木 Wood
Because every element has a personality and an environment, the balance is also a career and compatibility tool: Wood people are planners and pioneers; Fire people are visible and passionate; Earth people are the reliable anchors; Metal people bring precision and standards; Water people are the strategists and connectors. Two charts that supply each other's missing elements are the traditional definition of a complementary pair — in business and in marriage.
Chart: male, born 15 May 1990, 14:30 — Day Master 庚 Geng (Yang Metal). Element count from the calculator: Fire very strong (three pillars join a Fire combination), Metal and Earth moderate, Wood weak, Water scarce.
Reading: strong Metal being refined by excess Fire. Gifts: drive, authority, decisive execution. Blind spots: Fire-excess tendencies — impatience, overwork, a mind that runs hot. Practical balance: Water cools Fire and feeds Metal, so the reading points to environments and habits that bring Water: calmer pacing, hydration, evening routines, and work with a strategic rather than purely intense flavor.
